3UP: Wright, Beltran and Granderson

1. In today’s Post I wrote this column about how Carlos Beltran has so far exceeded expectations for health on a team with just a miserable history when it comes to injury. And the Mets actually have one other injury – beyond the slew announced – that they have kept publicly quiet. I heard that David Wright is getting regular treatment on his upper back/neck area. Wright was hurt diving to tag Houston’s Carlos Lee in the third inning of a game April 19 but simply has played through it.

The reality is that his performance was not up to par before the injury (.743 OPS, two homers, eight RBIs in 70 plate appearances) or since (.787 OPS, three homers, eight RBIs in 82 plate appearances). And the 2011 Mets simply cannot make a surprising run to contention without strong production from Wright. In fact, you can make a case that the only way for these Mets to find a way to, say, north of 85 wins is if their offense is among the NL’s best. Because it is hard to win without legitimate high-end starting pitching – and the Mets lack anything close to an ace, especially with Johan Santana out – and GM Sandy Alderson conceded there is not much depth for the back end with Chris Young expectedly going down with more shoulder problems.

To win, these Mets may very well have to outscore their mistakes. So far this year they are getting very strong offensive work from Beltran, Ike Davis and Jose Reyes. They really need Wright and Jason Bay to join that group. If they have that quintet going at a high level, maybe the Mets could approach 750-plus runs and, if nothing else, provide excitement at Citi Field. At the moment – even with Reyes’ electricity – they are on pace for 681 runs and a middle-of-the-pack finish in an area in which they either generate excellence or doom the team.

Sunday, Wright struck out to end the game; his 37th of the year, which is tied for fifth highest in the NL. As he returned to the dugout, Wright received some boos from what was an uninspiring (in size) and uninspired (in emotion) crowd at Citi Field. And you wonder if the people in charge are wondering more and more if retooling this club is better done by keeping Reyes (Mr. Popularity these days with the fans) and dealing Wright rather than the other way around, which is what has been anticipated with Reyes in the walk year of his contract.

2. In reporting out Beltran’s surprising run of 21 straight starts that ended Sunday, it became obvious how much mutual respect has been generated early within the Beltran-Terry Collins relationship. Collins protected Beltran early in the season and constantly has gone to the veteran for input on how Beltran feels. That combination has led to Beltran feeling respected.
