Tools exist to prevent many child abuse cases
I laud the efforts in our community to curb the incidence of child abuse manifest in the recent series in the Herald and News, but would like to call attention to a neglected aspect of sexual abuse prevention. Why wait for children to be victimized?
Statistics can be confusing because so much depends on definitions of terms such as "child" and "abuse" and who collects the data.
In any case, we recognize child sexual abuse as a serious public health issue. In the May 8 Herald and News, the Multi-Disciplinary Team reports it reviewed 169 child sex abuse cases in 2010, and yet of the more than 90 percent that were recommended for prosecution, only 32 cases resulted in a conviction. Since so few victims report abuse, there were something more like 320 victims of child sex abuse in the county last year.
While we appreciate the efforts of the multi-disciplinary team and our criminal justice system, they cannot do anything until there is a victim who has disclosed the abuse to someone who reports it with enough credibility to prosecute.

Abel Screening, Inc. has developed a screening tool that can identify men and women who are sexual risks to children: The Diana Screen®.
The latest version of The Diana Screen ® (The Diana) is due to be commercially available by the summer of 2009. The Diana was developed for use as a “pre-employment” screen by any organization in which there are professionals or volunteers who work with children. The Internet-based questionnaire screens for the likelihood that the applicant has sexually abused a child in the past. An applicant completes the screen in approximately 20 minutes and then the organization receives a pass / fail report for that applicant from Abel Screening, Inc.
The majority of child sexual abusers do not have criminal record because they have not been reported or have not been convicted. Therefore, criminal background checks, while they are successful for revealing most criminal behavior, identify less than 2% of the individuals who have molested a child. The Diana Screen ® will identify 46% of men and women who are sexual risks to children. Out of every 1,000 people, there are approximately 70 child molesters. Criminal background checks may identify 1, but The Diana can identify 32.
The Diana is already in use by several religious organizations and a residential adolescent treatment hospital in Missouri, Heartland Behavioral Health Systems.
The Diana Screen® is a questionnaire taken directly from a psychological assessment that is empirically validated and has been used by therapists and criminal justice professionals more that 100,000 times. It was created by Gene G. Abel, M.D., an internationally recognized research scientist, who has been awarded six long-term National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) grants to study the prevention of child sexual abuse. Dr. Abel is currently a professor for Emory and Morehouse Medical Schools in Atlanta, Georgia. He has published over 100 scientific papers including 19 on the healing of child victims and adult survivors of sexual abuse.
Dr. Abel named The Diana Screen® for a young girl who spent the first seven years of her life in a therapeutic group home, where the night guardian began sexually abused her on a regular basis. While Diana was adopted by a loving family at the age of seven, she never recovered from the abuse, and took her own life when she was eighteen years old. In hopes of preventing other children from suffering Diana’s fate, The Diana Screen® was developed in her honor.
