JSE shrugs off gloomy global stocks

The rand was bid at R7.00/$ from R6.93/$ at the JSE's close on Thursday. Gold was quoted at $1,504.01/oz from $1,490.67/oz at the JSE's previous close, while platinum was at $1,768.50/oz, from $1,757.50/oz previously.
Saevitzon said bargain-hunting also helped keep the market in positive territory. Despite upbeat US consumer sentiment and euro-zone economic growth figures, world equities fell on concerns over Greece's debt crisis.
Dow Jones Newswires reported that US stocks fell on Friday despite better-than-expected readings on US consumer sentiment and euro-zone economic growth, as lingering worries over Greece's finances weighed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 23 points, or 0.2%, to 12,673 in recent trading.
US consumer-price inflation met expectations and a reading on US consumer sentiment rose above economists' estimates, but investors diverted their attention to the euro zone as they continued to mull the prospects for Greece's economy.
Even as data showed stronger-than-expected economic growth in the 17-nation euro bloc, investors continued to worry about Greece as the European Commission said the embattled country's economy this year was expected to contract more than previously expected. The commission also warned that Greece's budget deficit would be sharply higher than government targets.
The euro turned lower to $1.4220, reversing earlier gains, as the market grew more cautious.
On the JSE, Anglo American leapt R4.50 or 1.37% to R333.00, Sasol firmed R5.25 or 1.48% to R360.19 and BHP Billiton rose R2.57 to R267.62. BHP Billiton's release of its supplementary environmental impact statement on Friday is one of the surest signs that the group plans to go ahead with a $30 billion expansion.
Among gold counters, Anglogold Ashanti jumped R5.70 or 1.87% to R310.40 and Gold Fields collected R2.39 or 2.24% to R108.99. Randgold, however, plunged 15c or 5.56% to R2.55.
Platinum miner Eastern Platinum surged 48c or 7.40% to R6.97 and Impala Platinum added R1.00 to R185.00.
