Soap opera plot for Red Shirts
When the Red Shirts leaders surrendered after the military crackdown on them on May 19, some thought it was the end of the movement. But the Red Shirts have found ingenious ways to keep the flame alight.
THE military crackdown against the Red Shirts had left a number of people dead, but activist Sombat Boon-Ngam-Anong was not cowed.
To keep the movement alive, he knew he had to find ways to get supporters involved in the cause again.

It created the desired effect, as his “red coffee party” of five drew a lot of attention, mostly stares, from the people.
“At that time, people were still afraid and nobody wanted to wear red,” he explains.
After the coffee date, he immediately posted his photos with the four hot girls on Facebook. And people especially guys went wild.
“They wanted to know who these beautiful girls were and whether they could join me for coffee. I said Sorry, I invite only beautiful girls!' But I told them they can do what I did and invite beautiful girls to go out with them on Sunday wearing red,” he says.
The next Sunday, Sombat went to McDonalds with four different beautiful girls, again in red shirts. And again he posted these “glam babes” photos on Facebook.
It caused quite a stir and soon, Red Shirts everywhere were copying the idea. Come Sunday, they would wear red and go out for coffee, ice-cream, a meal or attend some other activities outside the home.
Sombat calls it “Red Sunday”.
“I wanted to recapture the public space and people's imagination, especially when it comes to wearing the red shirt. I couldn't allow it (the movement) to be lost,” he tells Sunday Star .
On the third Sunday, Sombat asked people to join him at a food court and 80 responded.
“At that time, I couldn't insist that they must all only be beautiful girls!” he jokes.
But Sombat himself didn't show up. He was warned by friends that many plainclothes policemen would be there and he could be arrested if he turned up.
There was already a warrant of arrest for him for breaking the emergency law that prohibited an assembly of more than five people.
Just two days after the military crackdown, Sombat had attended a gathering of 80 Red Shirts and thus was deemed to have violated the emergency decree. In that sense, he was a “wanted” man.

Soap operas continue to wash out, and demographic analysis suggests audiences may be shifting away from the programming to spend more time on Facebook games.
