Hythe classic car enthusiast Myles Yarney jailed for camper van thefts

A CLASSIC car enthusiast from Hythe has been jailed for a year for the theft of two camper vans worth £16,000.

Myles Yarney, of North Road, was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday after being found guilty of the theft of the Peugeot Talbot and Volkswagen Transporter vans at the same court on January 21.

The vehicles, one of which was stolen from the street on which Yarney lived, were discovered when officers from Kent Police searched a farm in Lydd in April 2008 as part of an ongoing investigation.

Yarney rented a unit in an old chicken shed at the farm for the storage of a number of vehicles, and officers found the £7,000 Peugeot Talbot and the £9,000 VW Transporter hidden under plastic sheeting inside the shed.

A number of other classic VW cars were also discovered at the farm but none were identified as stolen.

The 38-year-old, who told police he ‘played’ with classic cars and stored them on the farm and at other locations in the area, claimed to be looking after the Peugeot for a friend who had left the county and said the VW had been purchased for parts from a man outside an Ashford car auction.

Jurors at the four-day trial heard he had told officers he covered the stolen vehicles in the plastic sheeting to protect them from birds, mice and rats.

Detective Constable Geoff Cloke, from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: “The evidence showed Yarney knew the vehicles were stolen and worth in excess of £15,000.

“One of the vehicles was taken from the very street where he lived, which shows a brazen disregard of the law and his neighbours.”

A total of 13 mobile phones were also discovered during Yarney’s arrest. He claimed he had so many because of signal problems, but later said it was because he used different phones to advertise cars for sale. He would not elaborate as to the reasons for doing so.
