Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) Must Be Doing Something Right: Recovering Income
Wells Fargo & Co has improved earnings per share by 48.9% in the most recent quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago. The company has demonstrated a pattern of positive earnings per share growth over the past two years. We feel that this trend should continue. During the past fiscal year, Wells Fargo & C increased its bottom line by earning $2.21 versus $1.77 in the prior year. This year, the market expects an improvement in earnings ($2.79 versus $2.21).
Financial Stocks
The financial stocks have been weak throughout 2011 as the Federal Reserve QE2 comes to a close. New rules and regulations have hampered them as well. As the markets have recently hit new 52 week highs, many financial stocks have made or are near new 52 week lows. Today, as the markets uptick again, financial stocks are finally catching a little bit of a bid and moving higher. Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (NYSE:GS) is trading at 150.24, +1.12 (+0.75%) while JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM) is trading at $45.25, +0.29 (+0.65%). Bank of America Corporation (NYSE:BAC) and Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC) are also up approximately one-percent on the day.
Income Skyrocketed
Wells Fargo’s income jumped 51 percent in the first quarter as more people opened accounts with the bank and business customers took out more loans. Revenues fell as higher interest rates resulted in a sharp decline in new mortgages. The San Francisco bank said Wednesday it earned $3.6 billion after paying preferred dividends, or 67 cents per share. That compared with $2.4 billion, or 45 cents a share in the first quarter of last year. The earnings were a penny better than the forecast of analysts surveyed by FactSet. Wells released $1 billion from its reserves for loan losses in the quarter as defaults declined, giving a boost to its bottom line. Revenue fell to $20.3 billion from $21.5 billion, largely due to lower income from mortgage fees.

On the one hand, the Obama Administration is patting Google on the back for helping with an investigation of Internet pharmacies.
