Salem company's mobile MedCottage close to market
A medical modular home designed by a Salem company is ready to be sold to people who are seeking alternatives to nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
Less than two years after the concept was announced, the MedCottage is ready for occupancy. Salem-based N2Care, the company behind MedCottage, unveiled a remodeled version of the home Thursday. A model version sits at the corner of Electric Road and Braeburn Drive.
MedCottage is designed to be assembled in a caregiver's yard and offer an independent studio home loaded with technology and amenities aimed at the health and safety of an elderly resident or someone recovering from injury or illness.
The 12-by-24-foot cottage is equipped with a floor designed to absorb 40 percent of the impact from a fall. Embedded sensors alert caregivers of a fall and remotely monitor and control other aspects of the home.
As the MedCottage hits the market, several companies are being formed and signing agreements with N2Care to handle distribution.
In the Roanoke Valley, two Salem real estate agents with ReMax have teamed up to sell and lease the cottages through their newly formed VAS Aging Solutions Inc.
Sharon Sessions and Vickie Robinson said they plan to market the MedCottage for about $85,000, or for a monthly lease of $3,900. They learned about the homes because they work with the wife of N2Care CEO Kenneth Dupin, Robinson said.
"We have a lot of people that are very interested," Robinson said. "We get phone calls every day, and now that we have a model to show, we can move forward."
Other companies have been formed to handle distribution in Virginia markets, and a North Carolina distributor has been identified to market the cottages in the north-central part of that state.
Chris Cummins and two partners formed MedCare Systems LLC in April to market the cottage in Northern and central Virginia. He predicted that the homes will be in demand not only from caregivers looking to keep loved ones nearby but also from veterans groups, rehabilitation businesses, assisted living facilities and hospitals.
While most of the early residents likely will pay for the homes themselves, Dupin said he is seeking to get Medicare and Medicaid to cover some of the health care equipment embedded in the home. Additionally, Cummins said discussions are under way about applying veterans benefits to help cover the costs.
Dupin, who is also the pastor of Salem Wesleyan Church, said after 10 MedCottages are set up in the community, the company will monitor the residents and use their feedback to make changes. He said he expects to sell and lease the homes nationwide within a year. He also is looking to global distribution, with the United Kingdom topping the list.
