Overcoming injury a big part of postseason softball
The anxious crowd encircled the freshly raked diamond. A long, exciting weekend filled with many nail-biting games came down to this.
All that was missing was the drum roll.
In the championship game at the Twin Lakes Invitational two weeks ago, Andrean was pitted against rival Munster. It was the kind of moment high school softball players relish.
But 59ers pitcher Nikki Steinbach's breakout year simply broke down. As the first pitch was thrown, the junior ace's elbow was in a bucket of ice.
"It was kind of hard," said Steinbach, who has verbally committed to play at Ball State. "I wanted to go in there really bad. I wanted to do what I could to help my team."
Instead, Steinbach went to the doctor and had an MRI. There was concern about tendon damage, and her season -- not to mention her team's postseason -- hung in the balance.
"They told me to monitor my pitch count," Steinbach said. "I have to be careful not to overuse it."
On Monday, the 27th annual IHSAA state softball tournament will begin. Steinbach is one of several standout players battling physical ailments, but for most of them, the dream is bigger than the discomfort.
Playing at Ben Davis on June 11 is what it's all about. You can almost hear them all say, "Give me a Band-Aid and give me the ball."
"I'm really excited about next week," said Steinbach, whose 59ers will play in the Class 3A Griffith Sectional. "We've always been good. We've bonded together more and more. I should be back to 100 percent (by then)."
Wheeler's walking wounded
On the final play of last year's Class 2A semistate final, Wheeler's Kylie Planck injured her knee. She could barely walk in the days leading up to the state championship game against Linton-Stockton.
And Planck was doing better than teammate Emily Bisch, who rolled her ankle against Hebron in the regional. Bisch did not play in the semistate and barely crawled into the batter's box in the state final.
But after falling behind 6-1, Marc Bruner's Bearcats roared back to take the title with an 8-7 win.
"It was very emotional, especially the way the game went down," Bisch said. "Being down five (runs) and coming back was very emotional. We overcame everything, the injuries, and what a great feeling."
The hobbled Planck was involved in eight outs as the third baseman. Her double play in the seventh, where she caught a line drive and fired to first to get a leaning baserunner, probably iced the championship.
