Walsingham PE teacher wins national award

Being an adapted physical education teacher means that he works with children that have handicaps as well as the “general education” students. He teaches seven classes a day, four of which are “mixed” classes, meaning special needs and general education students are together in one class. The coach has a little help with a few assistants working with the children as well. Each week the coach has a different unit planned for his classes. His activities range from T-ball to fishing. In October he takes 35 students to Fort De Soto for a fishing trip. Each school year he takes the students on five community-based trips that correspond with what they’ve been doing in gym class. He also arranges for guest speakers to come to class and talk to the children, such as players from the Clearwater Threshers baseball team. Later, each child took a turn going up to the tee, hitting the ball and running the bases. The rest of the children not up to bat stood by wide-eyed, waiting to catch the ball while standing on their individual squares of carpet. The carpets signify their position in “the field” and help maintain order after the excitement of their base run. “Go back to your carpet” is heard a little bit more than “home run!” on the court, but Sinibaldi is teaching them more than how to hit a ball over the fence. Besides teaching prekindergarten to fifth grade at Walsingham Elementary, the coach also helps out at other schools around Pinellas County as well. Children in wheelchairs used to be sent to Walsingham and a few other schools nearby, Sinibaldi said. But now that these children are becoming “more mainstreamed” and are scattered throughout various schools, some gym teachers are unprepared to work with them. The majority of calls for help are for kids in wheelchairs or with Autism.
